MEET OUR 2011-2012 VOLUNTEERS
Back row: Molly Chamberlain, Ellen Rolfes, Emily Thenhaus, Cathy Mueller SL (Loretto president); Middle row: Katie Jones (coordinator), Lilla Hassan, Erica Carlino (summer Loretto Volunteer), Barb Mecker (volunteer support team); Front row: Kathleen Stephan, Anne Lacher.
Molly Chamberlain just graduated with a BA in social work from Siena College, where she played on the water polo and swim teams. She is from Kingston, Pennsylvania and is working at N Street Village, a day shelter for women experiencing homelessness and mental illness.
Lilla Hassan just graduated from St. Thomas University with a degree in Communications and Journalism. She found the Loretto Volunteer Program through her professor, Amy Levad ‘01, who served as a Loretto Volunteer in Denver ten years ago! She is working at For Love of Children, a tutoring/education organization in Washington, DC. She speaks fluent English, Italian and Somali.
Anne Lacher is working with Loretto friends Mary Hunt and Diann Neu at WATER, the Women’s Alliance for Theology, Ethics and Ritual. She was an English major (with minors in gender studies and management) at College of St. Benedict in Collegeville, MN, and is excited about the writing and editing aspects of the position, as well as the commitment to feminist theology!
Ellen Rolfes is a graduate of Notre Dame University, where she studied radio, film and theater. She spent the last year interning at a program at Minnesota Public Radio and is thrilled to be working with Maureen Fiedler SL at Interfaith Voices this year. She originally learned about Interfaith Voices through a friend who knew Mike Leard ’09, who volunteered at the show in 2008-2009.
Kathleen Stephan comes to us after a year with the Border Servant Corps in El Paso, where she worked in a legal clinic with women experiencing domestic violence – and met the El Paso Lorettos while she lived there. Kathleen is excited to be bringing that experience to her work at Bread for the City in DC, where she’ll serve as a Spanish-speaking case worker in legal and social service departments. She graduated from Stone Hill College in 2010.
Emily Thenhaus is our volunteer at Loretto at the UN. She will be living with a house of Mercy Volunteers in Queens. Emily graduated from Nerinx Hall High School and then went onto Depaul University in Chicago, where she studied International Studies and Peace Studies and was very involved in activism on- and off-campus. She was college roommates with Abbey Schumacher ’11 and actually encouraged Abbey to do the program this past year. We thank her for that!
