Program   details

The Loretto Volunteer experience is more than a job.
It's a year of intentional living.

Service Year Dates

The 2019-2020 service year will begin on August 9, 2019 and end on July 21, 2020.

Eligibility

Loretto Volunteers must be single young adults, ages 21-30, with a demonstrated interest in working for social change. We look for applicants that have the ability to take initiative, a good sense of humor, and a healthy dose of maturity and sensitivity. Volunteers must be willing to commit to developing their professional lives, their community lives, and their inner lives. A college degree is required for most placements, but don't let that stop you from applying if you have alternative educational experiences. People of all sexual orientations, gender identities, faith backgrounds, races, classes, and abilities are welcome as Loretto Volunteers.

Simple Living Stipend

Loretto Volunteers receive a monthly stipend commensurate with their simple and uncluttered lifestyles. The stipend includes the costs of housing, groceries, the volunteer's commute to work, and a small personal spending amount. In addition, volunteers receive a reimbursement of up to $350 for one trip home during their service year and a modest relocation stipend of $150 upon completion of the program.

health   insurance

Volunteers may opt in for health insurance through the Catholic Volunteer Network for free. Dental/eye care not included.

loan   Deferment

Most volunteers are eligible for loan deferment through their lenders during their year of service due to their modest income. Deferment means you won't have to make loan payments while you are a Loretto Volunteer.

Spiritual Development

Volunteers attend three retreats each year, along with quarterly opportunities for reflection. The opening and closing retreats occur at the Loretto Motherhouse, a 800-acre retreat center with farm, woodland, and prairie scenery in Central Kentucky. The Loretto Motherhouse is where many Sisters and Co-members of Loretto live and work. It's a beautiful place that has been home to many brilliant women as they reflect, grow, and learn on their life journeys. Although our program is grounded in Catholic social teachings, you do NOT have to be Catholic to do our program! All faith backgrounds and spiritual practices are welcome!

Community    Living

Volunteers plan a time to gather each week with their housemates to share a meal, discuss current events, or dive deeper into the spiritual aspects of activism and introspection. Volunteers must be dedicated to investing substantial time each week into the flow of their home community and the general upkeep of their communal spaces.

ACCESSIBILITY

The volunteer houses are not handicap accessible. Please contact us to discuss accommodations.
