Emma is currently serving as a Wellness Coordinator at Family Care Health Centers (FCHC), a beloved health care center in St. Louis, providing comprehensive holistic primary health care for those who may otherwise not have access to services because of economic status or lack of insurance. For several years, Loretto Volunteers have worked in this dynamic position alongside skilled doctors and staff with opportunities to create projects unique to their healthcare interests. Past projects include: planning wellness fairs highlighting good nutrition and dental care, one-on-one counseling with patients including behavioral assessments, living wills, family planning as well as  re-designing educational and group activities for parents and children. Learn more about Emma's great work at FCHC below!
What have you been doing at your placement?
My work at Family Care Health Center is as diverse as the clinic itself! Family Care strives to provide wholesome and unique care for each patient, and my job is to help with the programs and projects of the clinic to make that happen. As someone interested in pursuing public health work, this position has already taught me a lot about how health clinics work and healthcare in general.

On any given day I may be meeting with patients, designing patient education materials, or planning community outreach events...sometimes all in the same day! Some of my favorite work so far has meeting with older patients about their living wills and meeting with female patients for birth control counseling. I also loved helping run a luncheon for breast cancer and domestic violence awareness for our female patients – it was really empowering! I do not always know what is in store for me at work, but the work is always rewarding.

Alum Reflections: Living Intentionally

Catherine Roberts served as a Loretto Volunteer at Interfaith Voices in Washington, D.C. during the 2013-2014 program year. She now lives in New York City where she is getting her Master's degree at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.

It would be hard to imagine a more different environment from my volunteer year than my current life.

Journalism graduate school is non-stop. It’s 12 hours of work at a time; it’s watching and reading news on multiple screens; it’s always having my phone with me in case a classmate or a source rings.
There is little silence, or stillness. When you must be producing at every moment, there is no space for reflection.

Now, I love what I do. I love the work of reporting. I thrive on being a little too busy and having a few too many tasks on my plate.

"Marian is a roller-coaster ride of a placement! In the months that I've been here I've learned so much about education in St. Louis, I've challenged myself to be a better leader, and I've recognized my desire to walk with students as they push themselves to grow. Everyday is a different adventure that moves so quickly as the girls continue to surprise me in great ways."  -Eleanor, Loretto Volunteer '14-15

Placement spotlight: Interfaith voices

Are you interested in exploring religion and spirituality through public radio?

"Interfaith Voices is the nation's leading public radio show about faith, ethics and spirituality. Each week we offer you analyses of the big headlines alongside lesser-told stories – those of Orthodox Jewish artists and African-American atheists, Muslim feminists and spiritual seekers. Through these stories, a rough sketch of our country’s religious landscape begins to emerge. It’s a marketplace of beliefs and ideas too complex for sound bites, and too important to ignore." Read more on the Interfaith Voices website.

Each year, a Loretto Volunteer serves as an Associate Producer for this public radio program hosted by Maureen Fielder, a Sister of Loretto. The Volunteer assists in all aspects of the production including: writing and editing interviews, booking guests, creating web content, maintaining social media and fund-raising. This is a great opportunity for those interested in storytelling and spirituality to gain experience in radio production. Familiarity with audio editing software preferable but not required.

The Loretto Volunteer Program is currently accepting applications for this position and more on a rolling basis - send yours in today! For questions about this or any of our available positions contact Molly Butler, Loretto Volunteer Coordinator: mbutler@lorettocommunity.org

Jes Stevens is from St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Fontbonne University where he studied Applied Sociology and Psychology.  In school, Jes completed numerous service projects and held leadership roles in the Student Government Association and Orientation team. Jes serves as an Organizing Fellow at Catholics United--Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good,  in Washington D.C.

What have you been doing at your placement?

I have been doing a lot of communications work for Catholics United--Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good.  Our efforts are to alert the public to the values and the social mission of the Catholic church.

What is one thing you love about community living?
One of the things I love about community living is the laughter. There are so many unique and funny things that happen when you live in community that it may be hard for someone who isn’t living in an intentional community to understand.

Mallory Daily graduated from Marquette University with a degree in English and Philosophy. In college, she spent time working on projects through the Marquette Center for Peacemaking and the Women’s and Gender Studies Department. She is originally from Iowa City, Iowa where her parents and black lab, hank, still reside. Mallory will work at Interfaith Voices radio show.

What have you been doing at your placement?

At Interfaith Voices, I've been able to dip my toes into a variety of different things--audio editing, booking guests, writing introductions and interview questions, and getting to know the daily operations of a weekly public radio show. I hosted my first interview a few weeks ago, with a Tibetan Buddhist Monk, and have another one coming up next week.
