Mission
The Loretto Volunteer Program pairs volunteers with social justice organizations for a formative year of service. Through meaningful work and communal living, volunteers live out the Loretto Community's mission to work for justice and act for peace - guided by the core values of social justice, community, simplicity and spirituality.
Core Values
_SOCIAL JUSTICE – Loretto Volunteers strive to “work for justice and act for peace” through full-time work in impactful social justice nonprofits. Volunteers approach their work responsibly by engaging in social analysis of the issues they face at work and in their neighborhoods – through anti-racism training, educational events and community reflection nights. The program abides by the philosophy that doing justice work is not just about your paid employment; living justly is a way of life.
COMMUNITY – Volunteers live together in intentional community. Volunteers commit to supporting each other’s personal and spiritual growth, to communicating respectfully with each other and to holding each other accountable for living a simple, sustainable lifestyle. Recognizing that authentic community takes time and effort, volunteers come together over weekly community reflection nights, weekly shared meals, and regular events with Loretto Community members. SIMPLE LIVING – Volunteers are paid a small living stipend that requires volunteers to be frugal and intentional about costs. But for Loretto Volunteers, simple living is about more than cheap living; it’s about cultivating the values of relationships, generosity and slowing down. SPIRITUALITY – The Loretto Community is an inclusive community of Catholic vowed sisters and lay co-members of all faiths – and our volunteer program is similarly open and inclusive. All volunteers, regardless of their faith, commit to exploring spirituality and cultivating an inner life and to sharing it with their community. Beliefs and backgrounds may differ widely among community members, so all volunteers commit to respecting and learning from each other’s journeys. |
